Summer of Growth: Highlights from our 2025 Community Respite Program

From May 27 through August 12, we had the joy of participating in the Summer Community Respite Program, sponsored by the Greene County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Bloom has been part of this program for many years, and every summer reminds us why it matters so much, because it’s always full of growth, friendships, and memories that last long after the summer ends.

The purpose behind this program is to give high school students, ages 14-21, the chance to join Bloom for the summer. Yes, we have plenty of fun with outings, activities, and time with old and new friends, but the heart of the program goes deeper. It is about growth. It is about learning how to connect, communicate, and build confidence. It’s about helping students and their families explore opportunities for the future, while also keeping a consistent rhythm during the summer months.

And this summer, we saw so much growth! Here are just a few highlights:

  • DJ learned to express his feelings more clearly and talk through them with our staff. He also made several new friends with some of the same shared interests. During his first week, DJ jumped into a transportation lesson with enthusiasm, acing an activity where students matched vehicles to land, air, and sea. His love for transportation paid off, and he got 100% correct!

  • Jamil practiced new ways of communicating his needs and wants with the staff, helping him grow in confidence.

  • Noah learned how to better communicate with both staff and peers, which opened the door to new friendships!

  • Caleb grew in self-awareness, learning to identify his feelings and use strategies to cope and work through them.

  • Kainoa made incredible strides in just a few weeks, going from only speaking with staff to engaging with peers and making new friends.

Watching these students bloom was the highlight of our summer!

We are grateful to Greene County Board of Developmental Disabilities for sponsoring this program and making it possible for so many students to thrive. Each year, we are reminded that with the right support and encouragement, students gain more than just fun memories; they gain confidence, friendships, and life skills that prepare them for the future.

We can’t wait to see what next summer brings! 🌱
