Growth in Action: Chris’s Employment Journey

At Bloom Community Services, we believe in meeting people where they are and partnering with the community to help them grow into where they want to be in society. Every success story is unique, and today we are excited to share one that highlights the power of perseverance, determination, and the incredible support of our community.

This is the story of Chris, a hardworking individual who knew exactly what he wanted to do and made it happen. With a little creativity, a lot of heart, and an amazing team behind him, Chris was able to find a job and thrive.

When Chris joined Bloom in November 2024, we knew immediately that he had one goal in mind: entering the workforce. At Central State University, he loved his job as a dishwasher, so we knew exactly where to start. While the job search presented some initial challenges due to Chris being mostly non-verbal, often communicating with a simple “yeah,” our team was determined to support him every step of the way. We got to work seeking out some local restaurants, exploring opportunities that would best fit Chris.

After a few interviews and a few dead ends, Chris never gave up. That’s when McDonald's in Beavercreek, Ohio, reached out asking if they could interview Chris. From the start, their team was kind, flexible, and eager to understand how they could best support Chris during the interview process. Together, we worked out a simple yet effective communication system–thumbs up or down for quick responses, and his phone for typing more detailed answers when necessary. The McDonald’s staff embraced this approach with openness and prepared for their interview with Chris.

When the interview came, the McDonald’s team knew exactly what to expect. Kenzie, the assistant manager, took great care to make Chris feel comfortable. The interview went extremely smoothly, with yes or no questions that were tailored specifically to his communication style. By the end of the interview, Chris not only had a positive experience, but he landed the job–right on the spot!

But the story doesn’t end there. The McDonald’s team didn’t just offer Chris a position–they created one just for him. His job focused solely on dishwashing, exactly what he wanted! He now works Saturdays and Sundays, right in the heart of the breakfast-to-lunch rush. Chris handles his job like a champ, and at only one month in, he has already become a valued part of the McDonald's team.

We are so proud of Chris and his growth, and we are extremely grateful for the kindness and flexibility of the Scott family McDonald's team. Their instant willingness to embrace Chris’s unique abilities and needs has made all the difference. Thank you for showing what true inclusion looks like.

Chris’s journey is a reminder that when we provide the right tools and support, individuals don’t just find jobs—they find purpose, confidence, and community.
